Make sure Chanel is spelt correctly - if it has two Ns consequently it's probably not real .
There are many ways to let somebody know. The lining, the material used, etc. If you buy something online, it will be phoney. All these people on eBay selling them for $200-300 are selling fakes. No Chanel purse would ever be that cheap, even if it be used. The only way you can be definite that it's real is to purchase it from Chanel.
There are some good knockoffs, but the valid thing will be much higher element.
The price is the main thing, though, and where on earth you buy it.
Chanel does not sell to people who provide on eBay or other auction sites. Someone may sell a used bag, but I would doubt even that.
For instance, I bought a LV pack from someone who was liquidating an estate, but it be still expensive.
Almost always a designer pod will come with a certificate of authenticity. If it doesn't and you request one but don't receive one, later chances are its fake. The retailer is also a clue; if you buy from an authorized provider (like Saks, Neiman Marcus) or the actual designers boutique, then its guaranteed to be authentic. If you buy from ebay or out of someone's trunk or off the street, later 99 times out of 100, it will be fake.
