How do i judge a backpack /and or tote daypack?

Like if a backpack says the dimensions are 14.5"x8"x7"x9", which is the length, width, elevation of bag, and depth?

And what about tote lots are they the same?
Answers:

do you own a cassette measure then you can do it your self...
I have never see four dimensions listed on a size listing for a purse, unless it has a serious taper on it, and then it usually is nominated as 14 inches tapering up to 6, or something similar.

The general rule for totebags, purses, etc, is Width x Height x Depth. Sometimes the span and height numbers are reversed, but the measurements themselves usually say something resembling 14W x 10H x 2D, so the letter after the number tells you which width it is referring to.

Width is how wide it is from side to side on the base.
Height is how soaring it is from bottom to top.
Depth is how wide it is from front to back.

On lots that aren't perfectly square, meaning they aren't the exact shape of a rectangle, at hand is usually something telling you if the width is measured at the substructure, or at the top.

The other measurement you might see is called Drop, and it is for plenty, like tote bags, that hold shoulder straps. Basically, drop is one-half of the strap length, and measures the space from the top of the bag to where the daypack would sit on top of your shoulder. A bag next to a 27 inch drop will have straps that are roughly 54 inches long, and will hang down 27 inches from the top of your shoulder. A pack with a 9 inch drop will have straps which are more or less 18 inches long, and will be up much closer to your underarm.

Hope that helps a little bit.
