I got a shoulder bag for my books that looks kinda resembling the lovechild of a purse and a laptop carrying case. It has a front flap where on earth I keep the purse stuff and then inside, there's room for a couple big binders. It's nice and practical and I similar to the way the airlines count it as a purse instead of an item of carryon, even though it has just about the same carrying capacity as a backpack. Which I'm sure you don't support about at all so I'll stop all over the place now.
