Timbuk (i think thats who its spelled) and bailey lots make really cook messenger bags. They're designed for bike messengers, so they're sturdy. And, both companies tender a whole range of colors and sizes. You can even procure a lap top sleeve for them. I'm gonna get a traditional put money on pack, because although I have (and love) a messenger bag, its too complex on my back when I carry books. I know REI have some, but you can get cheaper models, too.
