Okay, I tried the full messenger bag thing.. and I suggest you NOT to buy one unless you resembling shoulder aches.. or have severely little things to carry.
I think the best would be a backpack.
A tote backpack is cuter though.. but i don't know how it would feel like.

I would try a messenger bag. They are the compromise between cute (tote) and reliable (backpack).
Totes are good if you want to look worthy, but good luck finding one that will fit all you books. And backpack are reliable and useful but it's hard to find one explicitly cute and doesn't make you look like your contained by Elementary school.
Messenger bags are cute and stylish but are still well brought-up for school because they are big enough to hold adjectives your books. As for color, I would pick a neutral color that will go near all of your clothes.
